Of Mice And Men Essays (489 words) - English-language Films

Of Mice And Men George was in a state of shock after he had shot Lennie. All of the workers were suspicious of George and they were all talking about the incident when George went back home. Curley was very angry and he was looking to cause trouble as usual. Curley came up with a preposterous idea that George had planned to kill Lennie. He told all the workers that George was to have Lennie do all the work and then George would rake in all the pay. He said that Lennie didn't like it anymore and he threatened to tell on George. Curley said that George was just looking for a reason to shoot his friend. After George had told everyone of George's plan they were going to confront George. When they did, George threw a punch at Curley and a fight broke out between George and most of the workers. George got thrown to the ground and that's when Slim stepped in. Slim threatened to hurt every one of them if they didn't go away. The next day when George had awakened from his bloody beating, Slim had told George that Curley's father had canned the both of them. Slim and George were trying to figure out what they were going to do. George remembered that he told the old couple that he would take the farm. When he told Slim about the idea of the farm, Slim agreed and they tried to come up with the money. Between George, Slim, and Candy, they only had 500 dollars, which included what they had already sent to the old couple. They thought and thought of an idea to get another 100 dollars, but there was no possible way they could. They had all packed up and they were ready to be on their way. They began to walk out into the forest and to see what new obstacles they would have to overcome. George and Slim heard hooves off in the distance. All of the sudden they saw two men on horses in the distance. One of the men was white and the other was black. When they got near, George and Slim realized that it was Candy and Crooks! When they got off the horses, Crooks took out 100 dollars and handed it to George. They all were jumping and yelling with happiness. George looked up and yelled ?we finally did it, we finally did!? They made camp and the next day George mailed off the letter with the rest of the money. With the four men on horses they were on their way to their new life. They reached the farm a few days later to greet the old couple. They looked around and the place needed a fixing up, but to them the place was a dream farm. They realized that they had overcome their challenges and they were ready to start a new beginning.

Cults essays

Cults essays Cult activity has been on the rise over the past few decades. With it there has been an increase in the fear surrounding it. From this fear, society has learned much about cults, how they get members and what to look out for as far as cult recruiters go. Society as a whole has also learned what can be done to deal with cults. Cult activity and the fear that surrounds it Throughout the last couple of decades more and more stories of illegal cult activity or murders by satanic cults appear on the news each night. This surge of reported cult activity has caused a spark in public interest. There has been a large increase in the fear that surrounds cults over the past couple of years. A cult is a therapeutic or unconventional religious movement (McBride, 1985, 22), and the more cults that fall beneath the public eye, the more serious the fear of cults becomes. Much of this fear has been sparked by major cult related incidents such as mass suicide by the Peoples Temple or the murder of Sharon Tate. These incidents, and incidents like them, grab the nations attention and create widespread panic. But as the nation reads about these stories in the paper, the same questions seem to surface. Questions like How does this happen? or What can we do to stop this from happening again? are often asked. The panic and fear of cult activity in our country seems to continue to grow with the more unbelievable stories that hit the news. The first big news event that was cult related occurred in 1969. Five dead bodies were found by the maid at 10050 Cielo Drive. Beautiful actress Sharon Tate who was pregnant at the time, and her friends Steven Earl Parent, Abigail Folger, Voytek Frykowski, and Jay Sebring were found butchered thoughout the residence (Bugliosi, 1974, 18). The murders themselves grasped the nations attention, but it was when the murderers and their motives surfac...

Academic Goals

It’s opening night of â€Å"17 Again† starring Zac Effron, who is every teenage girl’s dream boyfriend. Do I study for my big Spanish exam or go out with my friends to see Zac Effron? When I have a big choice involving my social life and my academic career, I pick the less appealing choice: stay home in the office and study. Freshman year my dad told something that will always stick with me: â€Å"high school goes by very fast. Enjoy it while it lasts. Before you know it, you will be applying for college, then jobs.† Don’t tell my dad, but he was right.High school went by so fast. I feel like yesterday I was losing sleep about what I was going to wear for the first day of freshman year.I have been involved in competitive ski racing for seven years. Being so competitive results in traveling and missing school, I have been very good with getting my homework in advance and getting it done on the car ride to Michigan, Colorado, or wherever the race take s me that weekend. My goal is to excel in school so I can be prepared for a job in the medical profession. In college, I hope to learn more about radiology and someday have a profession in the radiology field. Graduating from college would allow me to share my talents with the world and help people.Even though Zac Effron will never be my boyfriend, â€Å"17 Again† will come out on DVD. My future depends on my academic career. Whether it is my teenage boy fantasy or a weekend of ski racing, school comes first. I will always have my parents’ advice, love and support to thank for that.

How can cognitive behaviour therapy be modified to fit the needs of Essay

How can cognitive behaviour therapy be modified to fit the needs of young children - Essay Example The client works together with the therapist in developing skills relevant for recognizing ill full thoughts, testing adjusting beliefs, changing behavior, and how one relates with other people. Normally, many clients in need of cognitive therapy suffer from assumptions that direct them to certain reactions. Among the assumptions are the thoughts of unworthiness, under-estimation of achievements, over-generalization of issues, maximization of negative issues and minimization of positives. For example, person who would have lost their job due to an avoidable mistake might believe they are useless. Such persons may focus on the mistake that happened and use the mistake to justify their feeling of themselves. The believe leads the individuals to damaging emotions like frustration and hopelessness (Scaruffi, n.d., p1). Such persons see themselves as losers and thus start keeping to themselves in effort to avoid making similar mistakes in the future. A prolonged feeling of unworthiness adopts into a response that confirms the original feeling of being useless every time the person faces similar experiences. Cognitive therapy works at testing the assumptions the client had and co nsidering new information capable of shifting the assumptions to a direction that allows different behavioral or emotional reactions. The clients with the help of the therapist train how to use flexible ways of thinking and response to issues. The therapy challenges the clients to interrogate their thoughts on the truthfulness and the advantages of such thoughts to their goals. If a thought is found unhealthy, the therapy recommends it replacement with more helpful thoughts capable of facilitating more desirable responses and can aid achievements of the client’s goals. Cognitive therapy therefore can be termed as a skill-building approach that allows the therapist to teach the client how to practice the skills learned individually until they become their own

Criminal Justice Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 1250 words - 1

Criminal Justice - Essay Example According to Jacob Wetterling Act, a state registration must require current address registration for a period of 10 years for persons convicted of a criminal offense against a victim who is a minor or a sexually violent Offense. A minor is a person below the age of 18 years. There are specific definitions in Washington which are used to identify how an offender victimizes a minor; kidnapping of a minor and false imprisonment (except the parent), sexual conduct with the minor, manipulating of a minor to engage in sexual conduct, use of a minor in sexual performance, solicitation of a minor to practice prostitution, and any conduct that its nature a sexual offense against a minor. In 1996, the Megan’s law according to Wetterling act provided a community notification on the sex offender registration and which brought about online sex offender registration websites. Adam Walsh child protection and safety act (2006) is the most recent federal law, which organized sex offenders int o a three-tier system with third tier registrants having the most rigorous registration requirements. The third tier requirements of sex offenders (RSOs) required the offenders to update or verify their information every three months and are registered in their lifetime. Failure to update information as required under this act one was to have committed a felony offense while a sexually violent offense is any criminal offense that consists of aggravated sexual abuse or an offense that has its elements engaged in physical contact with another person with the intention of committing such an offense. In Washington all juveniles who are sex offenders were required to register. But in other states the juveniles are required to register after attaining of 18 yrs or 21 yrs. Sex offender registration and notification helped to reduce the case of sex offenders recidivism by calling their attention through the sex offender websites, letters sent home with children, door to door notification an d also flyers. However the efficiency of this registration remains questionable with research to date indicating only nominal success. Also the registration facilitates the following; deterring offenders from committing future crimes; enhances enforcement of law and the protection of public rights. Adkins, G. Huff, D. & Stageberg, P. (2000) The Iowa sex offender registry and recidivism. Des Moines: Iowa Department of Human Rights Schram, D.D., & Milloy, C.D. (1995). Community notification: A study of offender characteristics and recidivism. Washington State Institute for Public Policy. Seattle, WA: Urban Policy Research. SEX OFFENDER REGISTRATION REQUIREMENTS Sex offenders are required to register upon release from confinement or when sentenced to community supervision. The department of correction or the sentencing court registers the offender upon release to probation and alerts the offender of the requirement to register locally. The local registering agencies occur at the local police department in the jurisdiction where an offender resides. In community supervision, the supervisor officer is required to maintain information for the duration of supervision because when the supervision ends the law enforcement is responsible for offender’s registration information. Also the state registration law applies to offenders convicted in other States. According to the

Gender Relations in Chinua Achebes Things Fall Apart Essay -- Things

Gender Relations in Chinua Achebe's Things Fall Apart      Ã‚   In Chinua Achebe's novel Things Fall Apart, the Ibo people's patriarchal society has a strict system of behavioral customs according to gender. These customs strongly restrict the freedom of Ibo women and help to reinforce generation after generation the notion that Ibo men are superior to the women of their tribe.    Among the people of this society, the condition of weakness is strongly associated with the state of being female. The worst insult that a man can receive is to be called a woman. The novel's main character, Okonkwo, is often obsessed with proving his strength as a man because he seeks to escape the reputation of his father who was considered by his fellow clansmen to be weak like a woman. He is ashamed when he learns that "agbala was not only another name for woman, it could also mean a man who had taken no title" when this insult is applied to his father. Okonkwo takes the insecurity of his manliness to extremes, and even unnecessarily kills the adopted son whom he loves deeply in order to prove his unwavering emotional fortitude. "Dazed with fear, Okonkwo drew his machet and cut him down. He was afraid of being thought weak."(43)    In Ibo culture, it is practically a disgrace to be born a female. This attitude is apparent in considering the emphasis placed on women to bear sons in order to carry on the honor of the family. When a woman had borne her third son in succession, her husband "slaughtered a goat for her, as was the custom."(56) A woman is honored only if she could "bear... sons"(82) to carry on a great family's name and honor.    Okonkwo is greatly disappointed by the tendencies of his offspring in their gender roles. H... ... physical power that they can exercise. Although this oppression is deplorable from a modern North American standpoint, from the point of view of the Ibo women of this period it is quite acceptable and none of them feel any necessity to change their social system.    Works Cited Achebe, Chinua. Bad Influence of Television

Television is a bad influence Nowadays, almost each family has at least one television. Even when we grow up, we still have a cartoon in our memories. But we can see, more and more children indulge to TV shows, they pick up bad habits from the programs and they lost a lot of fun because of they spend too much time in watching TV. Not only to the children but also to the adults, watching TV is harmful to people’s health. Too often such cruel behavior can be seen on television programs. The children could not distinguish which behavior is right and which one is wrong. They even think some cruel behaviors are very cool. And when the children watch television programs, their parents do not have time tell them how to do is right. The programs or the films have many fighting and erotic actions to attract their attention. Young children could learn from them and do the same thing in their real life. That’s why young criminal are increasing in recent years. Watching television i s interesting in children’s eyes. This is how things are. Most children like watching TV rather than playing outside. But playing in the sunshine has better influences than staying at home. Because of staying at home, they have less chance to make friends or communicate with others. Social work skills should be learned from a kid. Maybe someone could say some programs are good for children to know more knowledge. But in fact, children are not interested in it. Learn knowledge from their own experiences can let them remember more clearly. For example, take the child to the zoo to see tigers would be better to watch tigers on a television. If you spend too much time in watching television, it’s harmful to your health. Many teens have shortsighted because of this. And it caused the problem like fat. Staying at home will let you become lazier. Our body needs to do sports. When people are watching TV, their brain actually doesn’t need to think, the images and the voice can give enough information to them. So, our brain could be stupid. In a word, television is a bad influence. Let’s read books or go outside to play to kill time. Do not let television to be harmful to us.

Results and Conclusion Paper Essay

Once these children had been selected, height and weight measurements were calculated and the children began enduring the tests. There were different tests for height, weight, sex and age brackets for the children. Also, body mass index (BMI) was figured out for the children. This method of data collection is appropriate for this article due to the fact that the problem is that there is too much childhood obesity in 9 and 10 year old children and the testing of children of all heights, weights and both sexes is a good way to figure out an average of just how much the average child is overweight. The reliability of this article is just that the tests were done over and over again during different parts of the years to show that the children’s body mass index differed very little. The validity of this article is that the testing was done on a wide enough group of children that the point was well proven. In this article and during the testing of the children, they were not run ragged or forced to do these tests. Sportslinx was the one to help find the children from the schools, the article does not state if there was any other type of protection or permissions for these children to attend the testing for this survey. In doing testing on a especially children, there are many laws that have to be followed. For one the children are minors, meaning that the people doing the testing have to have parent or guardian consent. If something were to happen to these children medically speaking the parent or guardian would have to be notified, and then be present at the time of the child’s treatment. Each child would then have HIPPA rights, as well as privacy rights if they were treated for medical reasons. For the testing each child would have the human rights as well as privacy rights. All of these have to be taken in to account due to the fact that the children are after all just little people. Qualitative and Quantitative Data Qualitative and quantitative data are very important in research studies. The distinctions between qualitative and quantitative is that qualitative is the quality of the research data, and quantitative is the quantity of the research data. The qualitative data in this research study is the fact that the study was done on children of multiple ages, both genders, different weights and multiple body mass indexes, (BMI), and put them through the same types of test continuously. This was done to get baseline readings for different types of situations, and multiple height weight ratios. The quantitative data in this research study was the fact that the study repeated the testing on the children year after year to continue the readings, and configure the data readings. With this being done this helps be more factual with what is happening per child rather than an estimation or an educated guess of what could possibly happen with each child. Data Analysis Procedures Data analysis procedures are important in research studies because they tell if the a sample is taken or if this research is done as a whole. In the event of this study research, the data analysis procedure is an inferential statistical analysis. â€Å"An inferential statistical analysis involves observation of a sample of a given population. Conclusions about the population are inferred from the information obtained about the sample† (Neutens & Rubinson, 2010). In the case of this research study, there is a sample of children that are taken from the population and are tested an observed. Conclusions are drawn after the testing is concluded, and the data is recorded. Study Findings/Study Conclusion The findings of the article were great. The findings were much different than what was expected. The body mass index, (BMI), of the children changed very ittle of the year with the testing, and the same activities. Their body mass index hit a plateau because the children got used to the routines that they were doing. Which in modern diet and exercise, this has been shown to happen, so this can be expected of the children. Now if their routines had changed every now and then maybe they would have had better results. In the case of this research study, it is hard to believe that these children were on very strict diets for this long. It is stated that the testing was done on a year to year basis. Children are constantly eating junk food and having soda, and many other things that they should not be having, and it is very hard to believe that they went without these types of things for this long, unless they lived in a facility for the entire time of the testing, which is not stated. For better testing results a better research study would have to be done. For this research study the participants would have to live on-site, in a facility that could house many people for over 30 days. The next thing that would have to be done, is that all of the participants would have to be on the same type of diet. IF the participants are allowed to eat whatever they like this defeats the purpose. Lastly, for a research study like this all of the participants would have to do the same amount of daily exercise. Within 30 days of the start date of the study there would be a change in the participants, many would notice weight loss, and some would even notice new muscle growth. If the test was elongated then the participants would notice more changes. The limits of the research study that was done limit the conclusion that can be made for future predictions. In Closing In closing there are many things that could have been differently to change the results of the research study that was done. Maybe there could have been better results and outcomes out of the study as a whole. Yet at the same time there were many results that came out of the study that was done, and this will still be able to help many children in the world now. Maybe in the future another study will be done with newer and more improved testing structures. Reference Neutens, J. J. , & Rubinson, L. 50 Cent Rapper Life Review Essay Sample

50 Cent Rapper Life Review Essay Sample 50 Cent Rapper Life Review Essay Example 50 Cent Rapper Life Review Essay Example Motivation, hard work, good luck, and enthusiasm are the pledge of success. Despite the fact that the majority of people associate success with money, it is directly connected with the feeling of satisfaction. Success involves several essential aspects of happiness, especially physical and spiritual health, emotional and, finally, material well-being. Taking into account the fact that numerous singers, dancers, and rappers are classified as successful people, the given paper aims to shed light on the brilliant career and fortune of 50 Cent in the sphere of music and business. Life and  Rap career Taking into consideration the biographic data of 50 Cent, it is important to note that Curtis James Jackson III is not only a recognized rapper but a successful actor, investor as well as an entrepreneur (McKellop). Regardless the fact that 50 Cent faced numerous problems in the past as the rapper participated in distribution of drugs during the â€Å"crack epidemic† in the 1980s, his â€Å"addiction† to music motivated him to overcome himself and move forward towards his dream. At present, 50 Cent is one of the most prosperous and, at the same time, best-selling rappers in the world. Curtis Jackson successfully survived failure on the way to success and gained worldwide recognition (McKellop). For example, in 1994, while drug dealing and possession, he was forced to spend some time in the correctional boot camp. However, this bitter life experience did not obstruct him on the way to worldwide fame. In other words, difficult childhood, mother’s death, and drug de aling did not ruin the willpower of this famous man (McKellop). Rap career may be compared to a so-called orientation point that motivated 50 Cent not to give up and fight to the end. At present, an estimated net worth of 50 Cent is equal to $140 million (McKellop). Despite the fact that many people claim that success and fame of 50 Cent are almost unreal, Curtis Jackson’s story is incredibly inspiring. There are numerous convincing proofs that explain the unprecedented success of 50 Cent as a worldwide renowned rapper as well as a great entrepreneur (Hamm). To begin with, it is rather important to note that 50 Cent never forgets about hard work. According to the point of view of 50 Cent, this rule is the most reliable because persistent work will definitely be rewarded in a certain moment of people’s life. Secondly, intense realism is considered to be the second key to success. Robert Greene, the coauthor of the book The 50th Law expresses the idea that 50 Cent has a unique ability to assess real-world situations in an appropriate way and make conclusions about significance of these situations in the competitive business world (Hamm). 50 Cent claims that people who want to succeed in future should focus on their experiences while starting a new business, because experience gives people the chance to find the way out of the worst situations. Life, as 50 Cent believes, is a game, therefore experience is not a waste of time, but a valuable source of knowledge and the unique opportunity to avoid life traps and mistakes. Thirdly, the rapper assures that successful people should take up space in the world. In other words, great confidence, risk-taking, and, finally, fearless behavior have influenced the success of 50 Cent (Hamm). 50 Cent is a unique person because he hides his fears, skepticism, and doubt in front of large business moguls. Besides, 50 Cent is an ambitious and courageous rapper that acts as a leader in the business world. Finally, friends of 50 Cent confess that he is an incredibly patient person who has succeeded in overcoming discouragement and failures (Hamm). During the interview with 50 Cent about his extraordinary success, he claims that he followed numerous â€Å"rules† that helped him to push his fortunes. With more than 30 million albums sold during his brilliant career, this famous man has encouraged thousands of people around the globe not to give up despite numerous difficulties. Taking into account the point of view of Evan Carmichael, 50 Cent is a unique person who started from the very bottom and with the course of time rose to the top of success, fame, wealth, and fortune. Thus, the most significant rules that gave the rapper the chance to surpass himself are as follows (Hamm): hard work; enthusiasm; consideration and assessment of past gains and mistakes; understanding that money is not the only measurement of success; pursuing own dreams; being ready to accept the risk; having good sense of humor; being ready to give back (Hamm). According to the estimations of 50 Cent, he as a rapper has managed to make his rap career, and, consequently, musical success because he never gives up. In one of his recent interviews, 50 Cents gives certain recommendations or â€Å"tips† to people who are willing to achieve success in their life (Western). First of all, 50 Cent claims that the only voice that really matters is yours. In other words, the rapper assures that disbelief and doubts prevent people from moving forward. Secondly, 50 Cent confesses that he has always tried to reinvent himself because this unique feature provides him the excellent chance to adapt to changing conditions of the business environment. In such a way, so-called â€Å"reinvention† will offer a chance to every enthusiast to be tuned-in and go with the times (Western). Thirdly, the rapper claims that successful people should not compromise their character. In simple words, the rapper assures that in case family, friends, and relatives say that one’s dreams are unrealistic, people should ignore them because they will definitely fail to reach their dreams with such â€Å"reliable† support (Western). Fourthly, the rapper states that he has always kept working. 50 Cent believes that things will always go wrong in case laziness exceeds attempts and work. Persistence, confidence in personal strengths, and enthusiasm will give people the chance to achieve greatness. Fifthly, 50 Cent confesses that he has devoted his entire life to his dreams (Western). For instance, the phrase â€Å"get rich or die trying† is considered to be the life credo of 50 Cent. Moreover, it is extremely important to note the fact that this distinguished rapper states the death should motivate people instead of crippling them. For instance, during one of the interviews, 50 Cent says that when he nearly died, it made him think that it could happen again any second (Western). Consequently, he made a decision to live like he had never lived before. In other words, nothing should stop people on their way to success. So, people should not be bored and do nothing because the time of every person is limited. Therefore, 50 Cent claims that people who dream about money, success, and happiness should make progress towards their inner goals, travel, get new experiences, and meet new people (Western). The famous rapper affirms that he has managed to combat boredom and laziness. He assures that many people in this world are unhappy because they fail to cope with boredom (Western). Finally, 50 Cent, one of the wealthiest celebrities in the world of music, is convinced that every negative experience is actually a positive one because failure has nothing in common with a total loss. On the contrary, failure should be understood as an inevitable element or part of the success that drastically increases the chances of people to do things the right way (Western). Having determined, analyzed, and assessed successes and fortunes of 50 Cent in the sphere of music and entrepreneurship, I would like to stress that the biography of 50 Cent has really inspired me. Despite the fact that I am not a professional who can judge such a well-known personality as 50 Cent, and criticize his successes as well as failures in music and financial spheres, I believe that 50 Cent is a â€Å"created person†. In other words, I am a proponent of the idea that heritability and genes have nothing in common with his tremendous success and global recognition. On the contrary, I am convinced that he â€Å"created† himself, his fame, and wealth with the help of his desire, enthusiasm, stubborn character, and well-developed leadership traits. To be honest, I think that 50 Cent does not set restrictions and limitations on what he can achieve. Consequently, he has succeeded in becoming a wealthy entrepreneur, actor, singer, and rapper because he never places limits on himself and his strengths. He is a self-reliant and confident person who has become his own boss. Finally, I would like to sum up that I extremely appreciate his commitment to his work, engagement with his fans or followers, and, finally his philanthropy. Despite his financial problems and numerous imperfections, I believe that 50 Cent is one of the brightest examples of renowned celebrities who took pains in order to gain unbelievably enormous musical and business successes. To be honest, if I had an opportunity, I would do nothing differently on the stage of hip hop and finance because I absolutely agree to the decisions of 50 Cent. In other words, I believe that enormous success of this rapper in the spheres of business and music may be explained by the right decisions he made. Thus, in my opinion, he was not mistaken when he decided to combine rapper care er with entrepreneurship, investments, and, finally, philanthropy. I suppose that such recommendations of 50 Cent as finding huge opportunities even in failures, keeping the flow moving, respecting process as well as experience, disregarding the limits, and, finally, confronting the mortality may be followed by every person who is willing to exceed all expectations. To sum up, I would like to emphasize that I admire this personality because he is a kind and caring person who is ready to share his wealth with the world. In other words, I deeply appreciate his philanthropy and hope that 50 Cent does not do it with the purposes of advertising, but to help poor and destitute people feeling the need in his financial assistance.

Current Practice in Project Management an empirical study written by Essay

Current Practice in Project Management an empirical study written by Diana White and Joyce Fortune - Essay Example This essay presents that out of the 995 questionnaires sent to the respondents who belonged from 620 organizations from both public and private sector, only 236 returned for further processing. The data analysis revealed that out of the 16 project types, information technology projects dominated the scene with 25 percent followed by business or organizational change projects with 14 percent. Almost 37 percent of the projects were being carried out for a client organization and the rest were for the host organization. Finance, insurance, and banking sector represented the most number of projects, however, when it came to client organizations transportation, and communication organizations were at the top of the list. The survey appeared to be highly skewed towards large organizations because 66 percent of the respondents identified themselves working for organizations with more than 1000 employees. Most of these projects were huge because a considerable percentage of these projects ha d hundreds of people directly involved. Only 47 percent of the respondents had the title of â€Å"project manager†, however, almost 63 percent did confess regarding managing the project. 43 percent and 33 percent of the respondents stated that they were the main decision makers and they were involved in the decision making process.
